Black History Month often exposes a limited perception of what narratives we imagine black artists can take ownership of; legacies of struggle and violence, slavery and suffering, and the perpetual focus on familiar figures such as Martin Luther King only tell part of our experience, and perhaps it is time to consider those individuals left in the margins of history as well as those closer to home.
